Future Healthcare Providers
Many of the Expanding Your Horizons participants expressed a desire to become healthcare providers, including physicians, psychologists, and nurses. Here are their stories.

I Wanna Be a Pediatrician!
I wanna be a pediatrician because I would get to help young kids and its also because I love kids. Someday I hope to have kids of my own because kids make life happier for some people in the world. If I want to be a pediatrician I would have to go to 4 years of almost every subject I take in middle school. School is no problem to me because if I don’t mind it now it won’t be a problem then. Younger kids and family give me the potential to be a pediatrician. I love to have a family that encourages me to go to school because if I didn’t I probably wouldn’t be in school right now. I would probably be into drugs and stuff like that. I want to be just like my cousin Sonya because she is going to graduate in May to become a doctor. None of my other family members went to college but I think I’ll be the first to go. I want to have a part-time job and go to school so if I have a husband and kids I can help support them. This is why I want to be a pediatrician in my future. Angela

Becoming a Pediatrician
When I grow up I would like to become a pediatrician. I think it would be great knowing I am helping out. Last summer my little sister died because she was born premature. There were other things wrong too, but I am not sure what. I knew I needed to start looking into my future careers so at that moment I decided to become a pediatrician and take care of babies, whom I adore because they are so cute. A pediatrician would need to have four years of undergraduate school to earn their bachelor’s degree and four years of medical school. After completing three more years of “Residency” you will be considered a pediatrician. Altogether you will have 11 years of practicing after college. Your basics would be calculus, algebra, chemistry and biology. Christeen, Grade 9

Emergency Room Nurse
I want to be a nurse. I choose this career because nurses help people, and I would really like to help people out when they get hurt really badly. If something bad happened to them they really need to see a nurse. I would like to work at a hospital. Brittany, Grade 5

Doctor or Veterinarian
What I would like when I grow up is a doctor or a pediatrician or maybe a veterinarian. I chose these careers because I really want to become some kind of one of these days hopefully. A doctor does all kinds of things let’s see maybe like: help others with there health problems, do surgery, and even maybe do lot’s and lot’s of checkups. A veterinarian helps cure the animals in the zoo, helps to feed them, they could even help to cure your own pets at home or at the vet. They even help humans against diseases carried by animals. A pediatrician is a doctor who cares for children. Elvira, Grade 8

Being a Pediatrician
I would like to be a pediatrician when I grow up. I would like to be a pediatrician because I get to work with kids. Some more reasons I would like to be a pediatrician is you get to see your patients grow up….walk, talk, maybe there first day of school, playing sports, and graduate, etc. There are so many things you can do with them. The pay is not that bad. Pediatricians are not the best paid doctors, but their average salary of $135,000 a year will put you into the top 5th percentile of salaries in the United States. Jazmin, Grade 6

Psychologist
What I want to be when I grow up is a psychologist. I chose this career because I am interested in the human mind. My mother gave me one of her textbooks on psychology and I immediately wanted to learn more about Sigmund Freud and his theories. I was more interested, of course in his theory of the unconscious and the id, and not so much his theory on women wanting to be men or his dream therapy. After reading more on him and other psychologists and finding an average psychologist’s salary I decided that that is what I wanted to be. A psychologist studies the human mind and helps patients discover their feelings or why they feel a certain way. They discover, or make theories of why humans act the way they do in a certain circumstance. Kharli, Grade 7

Doctor
What I’m going to talk about is what I want to be when I grow up. I want to be a doctor. I still don’t know what exactly part of a doctor. I probably choose to be a doctor that is always operating other people. I choose this career because I really like the fact that the doctors have to help other people. Sense I was a kid I liked the fact that I wanted to be a doctor when I grow up. Let me tell you some information about a doctor. The first thing is that you have to go to school for four years. They make about $125,000 a year. It could sometimes be gross for the fact that you see blood. I at the time do think that it’s pretty gross. But I still like the fact that it helps people and children that’s the best part. Luz, Grade 7

Neonatal Nurse
When I get older I would like to be a registered nurse who works with newborn babies. I enjoy working with babies ,it is probably the only type of “child” that I can work with. I want to be an RN because I like to help people that are sick or babies who just came into life. To be a nurse you have to be able to communicate with different types of people, whether it be newborns or 100 year old people. A nurse basically helps out the patients or the doctors in whatever they need. Michele, Grade 7

Neonatal Nurse
I want to be a registered nurse who works in a hospital. The kind of nurse I want to be is a newborn baby’s nurse. I would like to do this because you work with baby’s. The nurses are supposed to check if the baby is healthy. You have to know your medicines if you don’t it may hurt the baby. You have to know other stuff to be a nurse. Yes you do have to go to school to be a nurse. If you didn’t go to school you wouldn’t know what medicines to give the baby if it was sick. Desiree, Grade 7

Pediatrician
When I grow up I would like to be a pediatrician. That is a children’s doctor. I would like to be pediatrician doctor because I always wanted to be a doctor. Since I love being a kid, I thought that it would be nice to be a children’s doctor. A pediatrician does a lot of things. They are doctors for children. So they make sure they are feeling well when they come for a check up and if they are not feeling well, they will help them feel better. They would tell them to use a certain kind of medicine to help them feel better. To end this short story I think that being a pediatrician would be really fun and exciting. I do have to do a lot of studying and school to do, but I am looking forward to it because when I finish and am a doctor, I will be proud about all the things that I have accomplished. If it were easy I wouldn’t feel the same about it because it would have felt that I didn’t work hard for it. When you really work hard on something, you feel really good about what you have accomplished in the end. That is why I want to be a pediatrician and I am looking forward to it. Jacqueline

Orthopedic Surgeon
Everyone has asked me, what do you want to be when you grow up? I just shrug my shoulders and say, “I don’t know.” It gets really annoying when people ask you every day and you don’t really know. So, I got to thinking that I better decide what I want to do so I can look into a career. And guess what? I finally made my decision. When I grow up, I want to study sports medicine, to become an orthopedic surgeon. I want to be an orthopedic surgeon because I love sports. I don’t think I could develop a career as a professional athlete, so it would be nice to help other athletes to earn a living. I also enjoy helping people and seeing them smile. To be an orthopedic surgeon, I will have to go to college for four years to get a bachelors degree. After college, I will also have to go to medical school. I would like to own my own office. This is what I want to be when I grow up. As I realized, it is very important for young girls to pursue their dreams and know that they are just as capable as anyone else. Don’t let anyone bring you down or tell you that you can’t do what you want to. Find your dream and chase it! Genevieve
